Native Gardening on Small City Plots

Event Description
(For adults) Join volunteer & native garden enthusiast Jane Porath for this 2 part workshop to learn how to rewild your urban spaces with native plants! Small spaces can create mighty habitats for birds and pollinators, while providing natural beauty in your neighborhood. Learn how to make the most of your small urban plot in this hands-on learning opportunity and leave inspired to plan your garden based on the challenges of your small urban Milwaukee plot. 

Focuses for each class in this session are: 

1st Class: The benefits of Native Plants and Wisconsin plant communities.The benefits of planting native species, a short history of native plant communities in Wisconsin, and a focus on herbaceous plant species that can be incorporated into your garden plans.  

2nd Class: Preparing & planning a garden for your space: Soil types and site features. Learn about soil types and focus on your site features, seed propagation, & identify the purpose of your garden. (solve standing water, pest insects, privacy, attracting birds, drought area or a gray green)

A little about our instructor - Jane Porath is a long time UEC Volunteer, has learned by doing - gardening on her own Milwaukee small plot for 33 years, an avid consumer of gardening books, publications, and media. Jane shares her passion for re-wilding and gardening with the Milwaukee community and believes you can do ANYTHING with a small Urban Lot.

If you sign up for a program and your plans change, we kindly request that you let us know at least 10 business days in advance so we have the opportunity to offer a program to others. We will provide refunds as follows: 10 business days or more: full refund, 5-9 business days: 50% refund, 0-4 business days: no refund.
