Event Description (For adults) Land managers have many management tools for supporting the ecology of life within natural areas, fire being one of the most invigorating in their toolbox. Prescribed fire supports ecosystem health in the form of forest regeneration, wildlife habitat, grassland and forest health as well as disease control. Yet is often overlooked in an urban setting. Join us for insightful discussion with UEC Land Managers who have been leading fire programs within urban and rural park lands for over ten years. Then head outside to observe urban fire in action!
Classroom topics include:
Fire in ecosystems: how, why and when fire has effects on flora and fauna
The basics: fire triangle, fire behavior, and fire regimes
Ignition and suppression techniques of prescribed burns
Safety and crew member roles + responsibilities while supporting firing operations
