(Virtual) Backyard Naturalist - Good Vibrations - Communication with Substrate-borne Signals

Friday, February 4, 2022

9:00 AM - 10:00 AM
Virtual-Zoom

Event Description
(For everyone) Come join our Backyard Naturalist lecture as Dr. Rafael Rodriguez Sevilla, professor at UW- Milwaukee, uncovers mysteries and inspires thought about insect communication.

Humans miss out on much of the variety of life that surrounds us, in part because our senses cannot detect the behavior of many of the species that live near us. Many animals communicate with substrate-borne vibration signals that travel through the substrates on which animals stand, such as plant stems and leaves. Study of this form of communication is changing our understanding of the lives of many species. For example, insect vibrational communication reveals unanticipated levels of complexity in their interactions with members of their own species, as well as with ecological allies and natural enemies. And much of this takes place right in our backyards under our very noses!

Upon registration, you will be sent an email containing the link to the Zoom session. Look for this email 1 hour prior to event start time. (If you do not see this email, it might be based on your personal email filter settings - be sure to check your spam folder)
