When a bird flies to your feeder you grab your binoculars and a guide to identify it. You see a squirrel digging in the snow looking for the walnuts it stashed in fall. In addition to direct observation, we can use techniques to find signs that an animal was here sometime in the near or even distant past. Your backyard may be full of these signs, and winter is one of the best times to look for them.
