Event Description
(For adults) Join the Urban Ecology Center for a workshop to learn how to properly prune fruit trees within your home orchard or a community garden. This workshop will cover proper pruning techniques, the best timing to prune, tools for the job, and how to pair your tree cultivars for a bountiful harvest.

Participants can expect one hour of classroom instruction followed by hands-on pruning practice outdoors with an Urban Ecology Center Land Manager.

Classroom Learning Topics:

Types of Pruning Cuts: Understand the basic types of pruning cuts and their effects on plants.

Pruning Standards and Timing: Learn the standards for pruning and the best times to prune.

Restoring Mal-Pruned Trees: Techniques for successfully restoring trees that have been improperly pruned and common mistakes to avoid.

Plant Cultivar Selection: Review bloom time schedules to learn which cultivars are best paired in the same orchard for maximum fruit production.

Tools and Safety: An overview of the proper tools to use for pruning and essential safety procedures.

Hands-On Practice: Participants will apply the techniques learned in the classroom during an hour of practical pruning experience outdoors. This hands-on session will help reinforce the skills and knowledge gained, providing confidence to prune effectively in your own landscape.
