Event Description
(For adults & teens) Master Bird Bander Al Sherkow will present a brief introduction to Bird Banding and the information we gather from birds. He’ll describe how bird banding supplements what we know about birds from bird watching and why that information is important. From bird walks we know thrushes and sparrows are in the parks; from bird banding we gather data that shows birds are using these stop-over locations to re-fuel themselves on their migration journey. Our banding data also supports a continent-wide collaborative project that studies breeding success and cross year survivorship. Each time we touch a bird, we want to gather as much data as possible, safely and quickly. Other uses of our data will be included in the talk as well. Al has been banding birds since 1996, and first banded birds in Riverside park in 1998.
